Creating an Outdoor Entertainment Area

Whether your home lacks an interior space for large gatherings or you just prefer to enjoy dining al fresco, now is as good a time as any to create an inviting outdoor entertainment area – in fact, it might be the best time! With new products and inspiring ideas, your backyard could become the neighborhood's favorite place to gather.

How to create an outdoor entertainment area

1. Assess what you have.

Are you starting with an existing deck or patio, or are you beginning from scratch? In any case, we can help. If you need to create a new deck, check out our AlumaDeck Decking Systems for versatile, attractive options. If you already have a deck or patio, but you'd like to add a little privacy to the space, our SunWall outdoor privacy screen and windbreak can do the job, or if you want to create your outdoor entertainment space separate from your house, choose the SunLounge portable patio for a solid starting point.

2. Add furnishings.

You may choose to lay down an easy-to-clean outdoor rug before adding furniture. Then, consider how you plan to use the space. Will your gatherings be focused on enjoying good food? A table and chairs or benches for dining comfortably is a good way to begin. Leave space for your grill and maybe even an outdoor bar for serving beverages.

If you're envisioning informal conversation around a coffee table, an outdoor sectional or sofa and chairs would work beautifully to truly create an atmosphere conducive to chatting it up or playing your favorite party games.

3. Add lively décor.

From throw pillows to seat cushions to potted plants, liven the space up with bright colors and fun fabrics. Here are a few ideas:

  • For a tropical feel, add palm print pillows, funky flamingos, and hibiscus flowers.

  • For the look of ocean-side fun, go for anchors, boat wheels, and dolphins in colors like navy and tan or oceanic blues and corals. Tiki torches are always a great way to light up the evening, and you can buy citronella oil for them to subdue mosquitoes.

  • If you prefer the mountains to the beach, Adirondack chairs around a fire pit with big marshmallows for toasting will put you in a high-terrain mood. Include a touch of whimsy with plaid pillows and nature-themed decorations.

4. Don't forget to light it up!

Top it all off – literally – with fun lighting. Outdoor string lights are a popular way to illuminate a space after the sun goes down. Whether strung from poles or trees, they help create a party-like atmosphere. You may also choose to add lanterns or candles – real or simulated – for a more romantic ambiance. And as mentioned above, a fire pit and tiki torches serve double duty to add light to your night.

No matter how you plan to enjoy your new outdoor entertainment area, a little advanced planning will go a long way in creating a space you're proud to show off.
